  Halo Reach Beta Begins… 

  Depending on which part of the world you’re in, Microsoft’s [MSFT] highly-advertised Halo Reach multiplayer beta period will be starting up in your region shortly, or has just started at this point.

  For the folks who’ve been eagerly awaiting this, getting ramped up with their Halo: ODST campaign disc is a fairly straightforward process: pop the game into the Xbox 360 console, fire up the game, and navigate to the new menu item announcing accessing the Reach beta. On the first run of the menu item, you have the opportunity to download the actual Reach client software: it may take some time, depending on your network connection. Once it has completed downloading, access the ODST menu again, and for the second time, click the menu item to access the Reach beta. This will toss you into the Reach beta multiplayer menu, where you can begin to hop into the action.

  If you have the Halo Waypoint application already loaded onto your Xbox 360, you can log into it to fetch the Reach beta tester avatar T-shirt after you have played in at least one Reach game session.

    Hey are people really getting into this? I like it but it seems to play different from regular Halo mp.

  The Secret Armory of General Knoxx… Not So Secret Anymore 

  The third Borderlands DLC, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, is now available for 800 MS points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

  Get ‘er done!

  And, oh, yeah: the level cap is raised to 61… Presumably because a measly +10 levels is not enough.

    From the intro to the new DLC, it looks like Athena is an ex-Lance Siren who has a grudge against the Crimson Lance and is using the Pandora invasion as her way to get revenge.

    Also, it looks like several of the red-type chests in the main game’s maps, like New Haven, have been converted to the lesser white-type chests. This means that the ammo panels aren’t available anymore.

  Apple vs. Microsoft: Snow Leopard vs. Windows 7 

  Apple [AAPL] and Microsoft [MSFT] have had a long history of competition, and in some cases, collaboration.

  This time ’round, it’s the comparison between the two companies’ flagship operating systems: OS X 10.6 (also known as Snow Leopard) and Windows 7.

  There are a couple of interesting op-ed pieces about this:

  • Windows 7 is darn good; Apple OSX Snow Leopard is a upgrade dog (Yobie Benjamin)
  • Windows 7 Keeps the Good and Tries to Fix Flaws (David Pogue)

  Guess which slant/approach each of the columnists has?

    Here’s David Pogue’s op-ed (originally from the NY Times, and reprinted on CNBC’s site) about Windows 7. It discusses more of the user-related concerns about the product, and if you’re familiar with David, you know that there’s always the inevitable comparisons with Apple’s [AAPL] OS X current version.

  Microsoft Retail Store Opening Today 

  Microsoft’s [MSFT] first retail store is opening today in Scottsdale, Arizona. Exciting, right?

  Although Windows 7 may be the big draw today, since its official release date is today, I can’t help but wonder how attractive the Xbox 360 platform plays in the retail space, especially if Microsoft allows for a greater breadth of game and accessory selection than, say, the neighborhood Walmart [WMT] or Best Buy [BBY] outlets.

  Just when you thought that the $100 discount on the Xbox 360 Elite console packages was a way to achieve new price parity with the PlayStation 3 price drops… Microsoft [MSFT] strikes yet again, hot on the heels of the exciting Modern Warfare 2 limited edition Xbox 360 Elite announcement, with an additional Xbox 360 Elite price deal.

  This time, it is a $50 rebate on the Xbox 360 Elite when purchased between now and October 5, 2009.

  PS3 Slim = $299? 

  Not willing to concede the console wars to Microsoft [MSFT] yet, Sony [SNE] is stickin’ in the game with the revamped PS3 Slim format, with a price reduction and a firmed-up release date for North America.

  • Expected release date: September 1, 2009.
  • Expected new price: $299 USD.
  • Expected internals: 120 GB HD, 45 nm Cell structure.

  Free Microsoft Anti-Virus Software 

  Is Microsoft [MSFT] prepping to release their next iteration of a free anti-virus software package for their OS?

  There seems like this may occur soon, at least in a beta version form.

  And how does this impact the folks who purchased that subscription anti-virus offering from Microsoft?
