Comment Spam, WordPress, and Akismet

Some of you have mentioned to me whether the general consensus is that Akismet is doing enough to protect WordPress systems from comment spam. A post that came out earlier today certainly puts into question whether there have been some false positives flaring up; of course, that post states that the bug belongs to WordPress itself, not Akismet.

On the flip side of protecting our gentle readers from the evils of comment spammers is, of course, the possibility that legitimate comments have been banned.

The possibility of this is fairly low, but it is certainly possible. But do not fear, gentle readers: in addition to using Akismet, we have other automata, semi-automated methods, and even manual interventions (including comment moderation) to weed out the bad/fake from the legitimate comments.

However, I also realize that many of you prefer private E-mails and comments: please keep those coming… we love hearing from you! But if you choose to leave public comments: please do not be deterred… we’ll continue blocking comment trolls and flamers so you may feel safe to express your constructive ideas. And if you like to follow system news and updates, as well as toss your reply tweets in, check out Javamancy on Twitter. :-)
