“Where were you on September 11th?”
This question will be a common conversation piece today, as the U.S. remembers the world-changing 2001 terrorism disaster and the subsequent repercussions. Rather than achieving its desired effect of cowing the free world into submission, the events of this day galvanized many nations around the globe into retaliation against a common (albeit hard-to-find) enemy.
At 8:46 AM EDT today (in about one hour from now), a solemn moment of silence will be observed for the innocent people worldwide who lost their lives during the terrorism events, and flags will be flown at half-staff all day to mark the observance. Several remembrance ceremonies will occur today, including the opening of the Pentagon Memorial to the public and observances in New York City.
