The So-So News

Multiple news sites have begun covering the Apple [AAPL] iPhone release in the U.S. after I kicked off the official start of sales one (1) minute before it began at 8:00 AM ET.

Also, it looks like a LOT of intrepid iTunes users (iPhone-owning and also iPhone-less) took me up on my instructions on accessing the iTunes App Store early. Congratulations to all the folks who meandered about the App Store, marveling at all of the goodies that they saw.

The Not-So-Good News

Unfortunately, lots of hapless new and returning AT&T [T] customers who opted to purchase the new iPhone 3G model were unable to activate their phones due to excessive network traffic that deluged the Apple servers, according to multiple and varied news sources. Some Apple sales reps even told these customers to “go home, and try activating [your] device through your iTunes.”

The Even-Worse News

Unfortunately, several of those people trying to complete the activation procedure at home with their updated iTunes 7.7 software ran into trouble as well… iTunes didn’t seem to want to work at all with the newly acquired iPhones.
