Open Source Mac

As many of you know, and some of you have figured out, I use Macs.

It isn’t merely one or two Macs, either. No… let’s just say, “Several. Oh yes, M-A-N-Y.”

Because of the army of Macs milling about, it’s important to make sure that a codified standard tool set is available on each of the machines (above and beyond what is provided with OS X itself). Obviously, cost becomes a factor (since I’m not directly funding a Fortune 500 company anymore). Plus, there’s a soft spot in my heart for open source projects, since a significant portion of my professional software development careers involves utilizing them in massively creative and productive ways.

But not every open source project is as good, or as useful, as any other. And not every open source project makes a Mac version of their product(s). There are not as many sites devoted to describing and linking to useful Mac open source products as, say, for UNIX/Linux. So whenever easy-to-understand sites like Open Source Mac appear, it’s nice to bring them to your attention, particularly if you are– like me– a Mac user.

Not that I’m endorsing every single package found on the site; however:

if not (softwareProduct.familiar) {
readAbout(softwareProduct);
download(softwareProduct);
install(softwareProduct);
if (softwareProduct.requires(configuration)) {
configure(softwareProduct);
}
use(softwareProduct);
}

N.B.

Someday soon, I’ll probably enumerate the machines I typically use everyday. That way, some of the “odd things” that you read about may make some sense (or, in some cases, be even more bewildering).
